MobilityTech

MobilityTech across air, surface, sea, and undersea

AMTI advances MobilityTech across four interconnected operational domains—air, surface, sea, and undersea.

Definition

What is MobilityTech?

Mobility Technologies (MobilityTech) includes advanced automation, autonomous systems, intelligent infrastructure, and digital capabilities transforming how people, goods, and information move across air, surface, sea, and undersea environments. These capabilities support safer, more efficient, and more environmentally sustainable transportation, infrastructure, and public safety operations.

AMTI aligns emerging MobilityTech capabilities with real-world needs—accelerating deployment, developing a skilled workforce, attracting investment, and driving industry growth through a collaborative innovation ecosystem.

The four domains

One Integrated Transportation and Mobility System

The air, surface, sea, and undersea domains do not operate as independent silos. Together, they form an interconnected transportation and mobility system for moving people and goods, managing and protecting infrastructure, collecting and sharing data, and supporting safe and resilient operations.

Technologies developed for one domain frequently enable capabilities in another. Airborne systems can inspect roadways, railways, ports, vessels, and coastal infrastructure. Surface transportation connects passengers and freight with airports, ports, rail terminals, and other intermodal facilities. Maritime surface systems may deploy, recover, or communicate with underwater vehicles. Data collected across all four domains can contribute to a shared operating picture and better transportation decisions.

The Advanced Mobility Technologies Institute (AMTI) works across industry, academia, government, and the military to advance this integrated approach. Through applied research and development, testing and evaluation, systems integration, operational demonstration, workforce development, and deployment support, AMTI helps move emerging technologies from individual applications into coordinated, real-world operations.

Across all four domains, AMTI emphasizes:

  • Safety, security, and operational risk management
  • The movement of people and goods
  • Infrastructure inspection and asset management
  • Data integration, analytics, and decision support
  • Interoperability and cross-domain coordination
  • Policy, regulation, and deployment readiness
  • Civil-military cooperation where missions and operating environments intersect
  • Education, training, and workforce development

Four domains. One integrated mobility system.
