From small uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) to Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), new aviation technologies are changing how people and goods move—particularly in communities and locations underserved by existing transportation options.

These capabilities range from small package-delivery drones to advanced cargo- and passenger-carrying aircraft. Together, they represent the most significant transformation of the air domain since the jet age.

The Advanced Mobility Technologies Institute (AMTI) works across industry, academia, government, and the military to research, evaluate, integrate, and deploy autonomous and next-generation aviation technologies in real-world operating environments.

AMTI’s government partners include the MassDOT Aeronautics Division, other state transportation and aviation agencies, the Federal Aviation Administration, and other federal agencies.

Beyond prototypes. Into operations.

Improving Aviation Safety, Mobility and Operational Capability

Advanced aviation technologies can improve safety, expand mobility options, increase operational efficiency, strengthen airspace awareness, and reduce the risks associated with hazardous or difficult human tasks.

AMTI’s air-domain work addresses:

  • UAS operations and airborne remote sensing
  • Infrastructure inspection and asset management
  • Environmental monitoring
  • Incident response and emergency management
  • Advanced Air Mobility and the movement of people and goods
  • Airspace awareness, coordination, and integration
  • Counter-UAS and airspace safety and security
  • Civil-military aviation integration

Applied Research, Development, Testing & Deployment

AMTI works across operational, regulatory, technological, infrastructure, and data layers to advance aviation technologies through applied research and development, systems integration, testing and evaluation, operational demonstration, and deployment support.

Our work addresses the complete operating environment—including aircraft and system performance, airspace integration, communications, infrastructure, safety and risk, cybersecurity, policy and regulation, public acceptance, workforce readiness, and long-term operations and maintenance.
